Alba and Penia are the natural extension of the main village of Canazei
towards the Marmolada. Both little villages are nice and quiet for
people who like to live in the stillness of a little centre but at
the same time not far from amusements and facilities. In Alba there
is the start of Ciampac lifts. The top skiers must go there, less
once in their life, to try the big slope in the wood: it is really
a thrilling experience! After Penia, over the Fedaia lake, the vast
extent of the big glacier of the Marmolada offers a spectacular skiarea.
But Alba & Penia are not only for skiers. Still speaking about
winter sports, at the ice stadium “Gianmario Scola” it
is possible to skate on the ice rink or to see exciting hockey matches
during the summer holidays. Never miss a walk in the Contrin valley
to discover the “malgas”, huts in the mountains where
cheese is still made with the same traditional recipe handed on from
father to son. It is nice to enjoy fresh and tasteful dairy produce
high in the mountains, surrounded by green pastures and uncontaminated
nature.
Alba and Penia still remind us ancient people, small farmers who
lived with the poor harvest of sloping fields, working hard to cultivate
potatoes and few cereals. They gained some money in the saw-mill
of Penia, cutting and selling wood. The antique “segheria veneziana” is
nowadays considered a jewel of the Fassa Ladin Museum, even if it
is in good condition and perfectly working.
